Waterproof requirements for outdoor wall lamps?

Nov 30, 2023

Waterproof requirements for outdoor wall lamps are crucial to ensure their durability and safety in outdoor environments where they are exposed to various weather conditions. The degree of waterproofing is typically indicated by an IP (Ingress Protection) rating, which consists of two digits:

First Digit (Solid Particle Protection): Indicates the level of protection against solid objects like dust and debris.

Second Digit (Liquid Ingress Protection): Indicates the level of protection against liquids such as water.

For outdoor wall lamps, especially those exposed to weather elements, a higher IP rating is recommended to withstand outdoor conditions effectively. Here are some IP ratings commonly used for outdoor fixtures:

IP44: This rating provides protection against solid objects greater than 1mm and protection from water splashes from any direction. Suitable for areas not directly exposed to heavy rain or harsh weather.

IP65: A higher rating offering better protection against dust and strong jets of water from any direction. Suitable for most outdoor conditions, including rain and snow.

IP66/IP67/IP68: These ratings offer even higher protection against dust and immersion in water. They are suitable for extreme outdoor conditions, heavy rain, or areas prone to flooding.

When choosing outdoor wall lamps, consider the specific outdoor environment and weather conditions where they will be installed. Opt for a higher IP rating if the area is prone to heavy rainfall, extreme temperatures, or other harsh weather conditions to ensure the longevity and safety of the lighting fixture.
