Lighting Design for the Living Room
Jun 06, 2022
The living room is the first room we see when we enter the house. We are here for leisure, hospitality, and reading. Here we concentrate on our favorite oil paintings and decorations. The living room creates an atmosphere for the whole family and shows our individuality. Hence, the importance of clever lighting design in creating the overall atmosphere of a family living room is obvious. We should choose lighting that matches the interior style of the living room and choose a specific color temperature according to the actual needs.
In this article, the lighting design of the living room is explained according to the different functions of the living room.
1. Welcome visitors
Usually, we greet visitors at the door for a brief greeting. The foyer is where the first impression is made, and we should make sure that this area is both functional and attractive.
You can install ambient light with several accent light sources; flush mount lights or semi-flush mount lights are good options. If your foyer has a vaulted ceiling, you can pair it with a decorative pendant or chandelier to make the entry more dramatic; if the ceiling height is low, you can choose a flat dome light that takes up less space and is visually more refreshing and give you the feeling of a larger space.
If a side table is placed in the hallway, a desk lamp can be placed on the side table as an auxiliary light source.
If you have paintings and sculptures in the foyer, you can use spotlights (downlights, etc.) to highlight the paintings and sculptures, highlight your personality and characteristics, and give people a bright feeling in the foyer.
Generally speaking, we can achieve prominent lighting by controlling the beam angle; the smaller the beam angle, the better the condensing effect. We can also condense the light through a lens.
By the way, the color temperature of the light in the hallway can be adjusted depending on the atmosphere you want to create. If you're going to feel relaxed as soon as you get home, choosing a light with a lower color temperature is recommended. The warmer light can make you feel relaxed and comfortable as soon as you open the door.
2. Relaxation and communication
The living room is a space where you can receive guests and communicate with the outside world and a place where the family can talk and relax after dinner. To achieve bright and relaxing lighting effects, you can choose a main lighting with 3500-4000K and add atmosphere lights with lower color temperature (such as light strips and downlights) to create a warm and fun atmosphere. The main lighting can use the LED circle light, the lighting effect is good, and the brightness can be changed according to the actual needs.
When lighting the living room, it is recommended to eliminate the main light and install enough ambient light. The picture below shows that a few light strips create a simple and clean feeling. This kind of design cancels the concept of using the main lamp in the traditional image and makes the light by distributing various point light sources or linear light sources. This allows each corner of the room to be illuminated more evenly.
If your home is a loft design, you can install the main decorative lighting, as shown below, which is very artistic and individual.
3. A quiet place to read
If you tend to read in a relatively relaxed state, you can use soft lighting with a low color temperature; if you need to concentrate, you can choose a relatively high color temperature lamp. Moreover, you can place a giant floor lamp next to the sofa or a wall lamp if reading in a fixed position. To ensure comfortable reading, we also need to control glare. The light source of downlights is treated with a bottomless cup, which can effectively prevent glare. Decorative lights generally use lenses or acrylic materials to avoid viewing LED light sources directly with the naked eye. Such materials can achieve a better luminous effect; the light is even and soft and protects people's eyesight.
4. The place to show the owner's personality
Living room lighting can reveal the owner's personality and attitude towards life. We can use accent lighting to highlight the elements in the room, such as murals and pendants, or to highlight a room, etc. Recessed, track, spotlights, etc., can be selected according to different scenes. In the picture below, several spotlights aptly accentuate the painting on the wall.
In short, as a multifunctional space that carries culture, the living room requires us to coordinate lighting, taking practicality and esthetics into account carefully. The most important thing is that it should meet our own needs of esthetics and meet the etiquette of hospitality.
You are welcome to put forward your ideas and suggestions.
