IK rating, which stands for Ingress Protection Rating (also known as International Protection Rating or Ingress Protection Code), is an international standard used to indicate the protection level of electrical equipment or mechanical enclosures. This standard is typically developed and maintained by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
The IK rating is used to express the degree of protection offered by the device's enclosure against solid objects (such as dust) and liquids (such as water). The IK rating typically consists of two digits, for example, IK67. These two digits represent the device's protection level under different environmental conditions:
The first digit (0-6): This digit indicates the device's protection level against solid objects, including dust and debris. A higher number indicates a greater protection capability against solid objects, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 6 (complete protection, no dust ingress).
The second digit (0-9K): This digit represents the device's protection level against liquids, including water. A higher number indicates a higher protection capability against liquids, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 9K (high-pressure water jet protection).
By combining these two digits, you can determine the device's comprehensive protection rating to determine its suitable environment and applications. For example, IK67 indicates that the device has high protection against dust (level 6) and is resistant to high-pressure water jets (level 7).
IK ratings are commonly used to describe the protection levels of various electronic devices, lighting fixtures, instrumentation, cameras, protective enclosures, and other equipment to ensure their safe operation and use in different environmental conditions.
